West Ham United Season Review DVD 2007/08

After the Greatest Escape many were expecting the Greatest ever Season. Alan Curbishley’s purchases of Craig Bellamy, Kieron Dyer, Scott Parker, Freddie Ljungberg, Julien Faubert and Nolberto Solano – all established international players in their own right - did little to dampen that optimistic speculation. The fortune at the end of the previous season, however, began to hide again. Dyer suffered a broken leg, Faubert a long term injury, Bellamy a complicated hernia, Scott Parker recurring troubles and Ljungberg intermittent problems with fitness… And that was just the new signings!

Despite the continuing frustrations of an injury-sodden season, Alan Curbishley’s men established themselves in tenth position in the top half of the Premiership table as if they had been superglued there. Robert Green continued his form as England’s unsung number one goalkeeper, saving three successive penalties, two late in injury time of matches that won the club points. George McCartney was a rock at left back; Matthew Upson returned to the side from injury and raised calls for a swift return to the England side. Dean Ashton was in the goals again and moving back to full fitness. West Ham found themselves in the Quarter Final of the Carling Cup with a home tie against Everton. A last minute mix-up in the defence gave Everton an ill-deserved victory.

And then, when it was least expected, the Christmas period yielded a last minute win at the Riverside over Middlesbrough, and a subsequent barely credible third successive win over Sir Alex Ferguson’s Premier League toppers, Manchester United. Four weeks later, a first win this century over Liverpool, first team outings for youth team stars James Tomkins and Jack Collison, and a goal on debut from 17 year old Freddie Sears to complete a second successive league double over Blackburn Rovers.

Ever popular Mark Noble, John Pantsil and Bobby Zamora enjoyed brief runs in the first team either side of injuries, but the guaranteed regular match-by-match likelihood was that Alan Curbishley could not field the same first team in any two successive games. The team’s end of season achievement of tenth place was remarkable under these circumstances, and strongly hinted at an exciting season to follow.

This DVD charts every single goal and incident from the 2007-08 season and, as a bonus feature, has the Two Tonys, Cottee and Gale, looking back on the whole of 2007, Alan Curbishley’s first full year in charge of a West Ham team that look more than capable of engineering a Brilliant Tomorrow!
